MOSAIC THEATRE PRODUCTIONS (MTP), founded by multiple award winning playwright Ed Shockley in 2004, is a child born out of the firsta child born out of the first SEEING PLACE FESTIVAL co-produced with First World Theatre; it honors the classical conception of theater – theatron – the ritual of drama that inspires self-examination by letting audience live through the imagined challenges of memorable characters. The three-week Festival explored theater as a trans-formational event using the work of playwright Shockley as well as that of prize-winning dramatists Kimmika L.H. Witherspoon and Bill Rolleri. It included workshops featuring Writers Notes Magazine Editor Christopher Kilm.
The emergence of what would become a biennial Philadelphia Festival led to Shockley’s founding of MTP as a venue committed to the creation and presentation of challenging and entertaining theater that is socially, culturally and ethnically diverse. Shockley's more than thirty year career has included several box office record setting productions (A NIGHT IN THE LIFE OF BESSIE SMITH, BOBOS-co-authored with James McBride, THE LIARS CONTEST) as well as international acclaim for his short film STONE MANSION (Berlin Film Festival, HBO, PBS). He shares lessons on craft and career in his new book, NOTES FROM A PRACTICING WRITER, and through workshop lectures with Philadelphia Young Playwrights, Young Writers Day and PA Arts in Education Partnership. Now as the recipient of the prestigious 2008 PEW PLAYWRIGHTING FELLOWSHIP, Mr. Shockley is free to devote himself full time to writing and the growth of this young production company.
